Causes of a dirty roof
The insidious thing about dirty roofs is that they can creep up on you without you noticing. Because the process is so slow, your roof can change colour altogether without you even realising that something is unusual.
The main cause of a dirty roof is persistently damp conditions. Unrelenting rainfall, weeks of cloudy weather, shade from large trees, or an accumulation of debris can all stop your roof from drying properly – and all of these conditions are very common in New Zealand. While you’re sitting comfortably by the heater indoors, your roof is becoming an ideal breeding ground for mould, lichen, and other organisms.
Another significant cause of problematic grime is damage to the roof’s structure. A broken shingle, for example, can provide a foothold for mould even in relatively dry conditions. When we inspect your roof, we’ll look for any damage of this sort and let you know what you can do to reduce future grime buildup.
How to know when your roof needs a clean
Essentially, you have to inspect your roof as carefully as possible. Unless you’re experienced or don’t mind the risk, you should look from below rather than climbing up on a ladder. You should be able to see any green patches of moss, broken shingles, or mysterious black streaks. If it looks dirty, then it probably is dirty. Rain won’t wash it away – it’ll only make it worse over time.
The challenge is knowing where to draw the line between a slight defect and more serious grime buildup. This is ultimately up to you, but it’s worth bearing in mind that roof grime is a bit like dental plaque. It’ll only get worse over time, and the longer you leave it, the more likely it is you’ll begin to see actual damage.
